You’ll Hit the Number and Still Feel Broke.
Making more will not fix it, and your own paycheck already proves it.

Let me tell you what’s going to happen to you, because it happens to almost everyone who starts making real money, and nobody warns you about it.
You’ll hit the number you used to dream about. Let’s call it a million dollars. And the day the account finally shows it, you’ll feel exactly as behind as you do right now.
Here’s the mechanism, and once you see it you can’t unsee it. Every time your income jumps, your life quietly jumps with it. And here’s the part people get wrong: you don’t blow the money. You make a hundred completely reasonable calls. The bigger place, because the commute was wrecking you. The school, because how could you not. And a year later you’re earning more than you ever have and there’s nothing left at the end of the month, because your life grew to eat every dollar of the raise.
Now here’s what I actually need you to hear. Making more will not fix this. It cannot. And you already ran the experiment yourself. Think about the number you were making three years ago. Be honest, that number was the dream once. You passed it. Did the fear go away? It did not. The target moved the second you got close, and it’ll move again, and the raise you’re quietly counting on to finally feel safe is going to reset the whole thing one more time.
The size of the number was never the problem. You just never picked one. You never sat down and said, out loud, this is the number, and this is the life it’s for. So there’s no finish line. There’s just a faster treadmill and a bigger paycheck, and you can’t figure out why you’re not getting anywhere.
There’s a way off it, and it’s not earning more. It’s picking your number yourself, on purpose, before your next raise picks it for you. I’ll walk you through exactly how on Tuesday, and why the people who actually feel rich are almost never the ones with the most.
But take this part with you today. If you’ve been quietly waiting to feel rich, and it keeps not showing up no matter what the account says, you’re not broken and you’re not ungrateful. Nobody ever told you the number doesn’t come with the feeling attached. You have to build that part yourself, and almost nobody does.
Talk Tuesday.
